Expert Dialogue and Strategic Recommendations for Comprehensive Obesity Care and Anti-Obesity Medications

Summary:

GLP-1 receptor agonists and other anti-obesity medications (AOMs) are valuable tools in obesity treatment, but they are not standalone solutions. Their effectiveness depends on integration into comprehensive care; achieving this requires policy reforms, improved access to interdisciplinary care teams, and efforts to reduce weight bias and stigma.

To advance these goals, the Obesity Medicine Association, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and Atlas Clarity, with financial support from Abbott Nutrition, convened a National Stakeholder Dialogue. This dialogue brought together individuals living with obesity, clinical and nutrition experts, and health policy leaders to identify actionable strategies for incorporating nutrition and essential support into care for patients using AOMs.

The resulting paper, “Nutrition and Obesity Management in the Context of Anti-Obesity Medications: A Blueprint for Action,” outlines actionable short-, mid-, and long-term steps for stakeholders to ensure coordinated, patient-centered obesity care for all individuals living with obesity. The team also produced an Infographic, which summarizes recommended actions from the Blueprint in a succinct format that can be used as an advocacy tool.
